What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures don’t sit directly on your gums the way traditional dentures do. Instead, they are supported by dental implant posts, which can be surgically placed in your jaw in order to act as new tooth roots. Sometimes implant dentures are fixed, but in other cases, they are designed to be removable.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

A fixed implant denture can only be removed by a professional. Other than that, it will stay in your mouth at all times. For many patients, getting a fixed implant denture is the more convenient option because the prosthesis doesn’t have to be removed for cleaning; you can simply brush it the way you would your natural teeth.

Removable Implant Dentures

Much like a traditional denture, you can take a removable implant denture out of your mouth whenever you like. Removable implant dentures typically require fewer implant posts to support them than fixed ones. For this reason, removable implant dentures may be recommended for patients with less jawbone density.

The Implant Denture Process

First, an initial consultation will need to be held so that we can make sure that you are able to have dental implants placed. Sometimes we may find that preliminary treatments like bone grafting are necessary for preparing the mouth for dental implant surgery.

When the time comes to receive your dental implants, the posts will be placed in precisely chosen points in your jawbone. Over time, these posts will form a strong bond with the bone via a process called osseointegration. Metal connector pieces called abutments will be attached to the posts. Then the final dentures will be designed; once they’re ready, the abutments can be used to anchor them to the implants.

You may qualify for implant dentures if you meet these criteria:

  • You are missing an entire arch of teeth.
  • You do not have oral health issues that might lead to dental implant failure, such as gum disease.
  • There is a sufficient amount of bone in your jaw for dental implant surgery.
  • You are able and willing to commit to practicing excellent oral hygiene once dental implants have been placed.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Your implant dentures will give you plenty of reasons to smile in the long run:

  • Your new teeth will both look and feel natural.
  • The prosthesis will not slip or shift at awkward moments.
  • You will be able to eat all kinds of foods thanks to the enhanced biting force of the implant posts.
  • The stimulation from the dental implants will help prevent bone loss in your jaw.
  • The lifespan of implant dentures is often longer than 30 years.
