How Dental Insurance Works with Periodontics

Even though we are a specialty dental office, we still get the same question that is asked in every dental office every day, “Will my dental insurance cover this?” We understand that the affordability of your periodontal treatment is extremely important, which is why we’re happy to accept many dental insurance plans. To learn how we might be able to use it to help you save with us, be sure to read our quick guide below. If you have any questions about your particular policy, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance and health insurance share a lot of similarities in that in exchange for a monthly premium, you received discounted care. With dental insurance, the highest amount of coverage is usually dedicated to preventive treatments like checkups and cleanings. However, many plans also offer benefits to help pay for procedures like gum disease therapy and dental implant placement. In fact, many providers have special periodontal plans designed to specifically help the type of patients we routinely see in our periodontal office.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

For gum disease therapy, most plans will help pay for procedures like scaling and root planing as well as periodontal maintenance. If a gum treatment is more advanced (like gum graft), however, the coverage can vary quite a bit from plan to plan. While these types of procedures might be included on a periodontal insurance plan, they may not be part of a regular dental insurance policy.

Some plans will help pay for dental implant placement, but others may only cover procedures that occur in tandem with dental implants. Instead of the surgery itself, patients can expect their benefits to help with things like exams, X-rays, sedation, and the restoration that goes on top of their implants.
